SHE COULDN'T SAY NO (1954) * Romantic comedy, not funny and unromantic to the point of revulsion. Jean Simmons wanders around town looking inconceivably unembarrassed while sporting one of the worst haircuts of all time. The name of the town is Progress, Arkansas, the funniest part of the film but even it is compromised by the imminent historical disaster to come out of Hope. You have to feel sorry for Robert Mitchum-it's obvious that he's going to get stuck with Simmons at the expense of ever catching Hercules the fish, and even though the alternatives aren't terribly promising you know that they're closer to justice. She throws money around anonymously under the false impression that the locals would prefer ancient scotch to moonshine, a modus operendi not so different from that of distributor Howard Hughes once he went nuts and also sported a funny haircut, though not nutty enough to sport the one they put on Simmons. Marketed in the UK as "Beautiful But Dangerous," a reference, apparently, to the hapless Hercules.
