SOMMERSBY (1993) * Richard Gere struggles mightily to get his shirt on for several hours in a plantation setting. He fails in this pursuit but somehow manages to impregnate Jodie Foster, which naturally infuriates the local Ku Klux Klan and leads to a court scene extraordinarily violative of any accurate conceptions of the production of evidence, the prejudiciality of evidence, the spousal immunity rule, etc. I've read that the plot involves Gere pretending to come back from war as someone else but found myself wondering whether he and Foster, hopelessly bumbling through a historically unimpressive script, making strange eyebrow gestures, and uttering hopelessly stupid nothings to each other during the continuous flood of PG love scenes ("I've forgotten how to be with you.") could possibly be the actors mentioned in the "credits." The only hope is when a gallows is erected but, alas, the producers never make an appearance.
