SPIRITS OF THE DEAD (1968) ** Three different tales of Poe, three different celebrated directors, lots of great shots, but ultimately mostly stupid. Roger Vadim's piece (*) relies almost entirely on the beauty of the castle, countryside, and Fonda siblings. Louis Malle does a little better (*1/2), but relies even more on titillation than did Vadim, with Brigitte Bardot winning by a bit over Jane Fonda. Fellini's piece (***) is significantly better, full of bizarre commentaries on megastardom in the late '60s, life in general, and spirituality in particular. The awards ceremony is fucking hysterical.
