STILL CRAZY (1998) *** It's nice when Hollywood notices that beginning thirty years ago or so civilization as we know it began a seismic cultural renaissance, and a period of musical creativity of epic proportions. There are, of course, at least twenty real acts playing out the rest of their rope with stories every bit as entertaining, full of unusual characters, and dramatic as the fictitious Strange Fruit. In fact the Fruit aren't really all that great, from what we hear, but their hearts are in the right place and they stand headlong in the legendary epoch. Stephen Rea is clearly the great actor of this ensemble, but he doesn't bury the rest. In fact Billy Connolly steals the best moments, though not quite as monstrously as he does in interviews. The characters are drawn with broad strokes anyway, this is a film about feelings and situations. Yeah it's a little patchy, but shouldn't it be?, and it's got some sublime moments, and a few hilarious ones.
