STRANGE INVADERS (1983) * This is one of those films that peak just before the opening credits. It didn't have to be that way. It has elements of several intriguing metaphors (the aliens are operating out of a 1950s church basement; only the National Inquirer-type newspaper can figure out the truth-and only because it makes it up) that are left entirely undeveloped. It also has several fine genre scenes: a lady is in Central Park at midnight, goes inside for a minute and goes back out into broad daylight; the protagonists hold their ears close to a brick wall while eavesdropping. The aliens are familiar with middle-America lifestyle and fashion, and so are mistaken in New York for advocates of the punk aesthetic.
