STROMBOLI (1950) ** This is why the director shouldn't get romantically involved with the star: some of Ingrid Bergman's scenes of anguish and self-torment are interminable. Roberto Rosellini does better in shooting the island mystique and quaint islanders who sing cool songs at sea while catching fish and even cooler ones while waiting for the volcano to finish erupting. Bergman borders on the unbearable, announcing that she's different than everyone else and then whining when everyone else decides that she's different than them. Her husband married her out of an internment camp after she failed to gain entry into Argentina, and brought her to a beautiful Mediterranean island for which she never forgives him. He's dull and loving for his part, until her infectious insanity overwhelms him, but the sad reality is that internment camp is better than some relationships.
