SUPERMAN II (1980) ** In a case of very bad timing, and dubious aesthetics, Superman decides to give up his powers and become human so he can marry Margot Kidder just as three Bad People From Outer Space invade Idaho. This would have had serious cross-genre possibilities if the BPOS trio had been vampires, or a vampire/werewolf/zombie troika. Christopher Reeve is very appropriately doofy as Clark Kent, but as Superman is only slightly more appealing than Kidder as Lois Lane. On the other hand Gene Hackman is brilliant as the used-car salesman-like Lex Luther, self-proclaimed greatest criminal mastermind on earth, and his confidence in his inevident talents is nothing short of inspiring. Starts off very nicely, but someone should have told Mario Puzo that everything doesn't have to be as long as The Godfather. Leaves you wishing that Ed Wood was still around to present "Lex Luther v. The Godfather: The Gangsta Match-Up You Can't Refuse."
