THE TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON (1956) ** After World War II the Americans occupy Okinawa with the idea of teaching them some democracy. Everyone isn't cut out to be a soldier and Glenn Ford is really a doddering Humanities professor who is soon conned into presiding over a communist-collective brandy distillery, assisted by a shrink who's really into organic farming. Marlon Brando shows flashes of brilliance as the conniving local interpreter, but just as regularly falls out of character, striding across the dirt town square like The Wild One. Some nice but superficial socio-political commentaries which could have been considered outrageous (and grounds for blackballing) at the time.
