THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968) *1/2 This shoulda been better. It has a theme with a perky pop tempo and pretentious lyrics, Steve McQueen fighting "the system" while wearing suits and stogies, Faye Dunaway with an absurd hairpiece, false eyelashes and fake nails; multi-screen visuals, an old Ferrari and a dune buggy, a glider, jet planes and international travel...all for naught. There is a fairly sensual chess match between the two stars, but mainly he stands around mugging or laughing like a hyena. She mainly stands around trying to act sensual and as an embodiment of new morals ("So I'm immoral," she says). Oh yeah, there's technically a plot: he's a super capitalist who gets off by robbing banks and she's an insurance adjuster out to catch him (but she has the Ferrari?). It wouldn't be a '60s flick if they didn't get romantic, but relationships where insurance adjusters go for the target of their investigation, and turn them in, so rarely work.
