THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS (1966) **1/2 Waal, when that train pulls into St. Francisville you just never know what's going to happen. It's not an outrageous or entirely unpredictable walk down the memory lane of juvenile delinquent-turns-good films, but I don't think it was aimed at the cinematic cognoscenti. Hayley Mills smokes (yikes!) on her way to boarding school at the convent. Mother Superior Rosaline Russell explodes at minor enough stuff (cops, fire trucks, bubble bath, etc.) to seem human. That the band wins a competition based on its uniforms lends the screenwriters credibility. Ida Lupino, directing, keeps the train steady down the track through the usual curves, but with a sense of humor, dignity (of delinquents and nuns), and continuity.
