TRUE LOVE (1989) *1/2 This acclaimed film (Jury Award, Sundance) proves for once and for all that just because a film is low budget doesn't mean that there's a compelling idea behind it. The actors range from fine to very good, the shots are interesting enough (the one of the bride on the toilet with her gown is very funny), but there just ain't much there. And it's even about Italians in New York! The music is the only thing that really stands out. 1989 actually was a very good year musically, but this film features the worst kind crap from the dredge-bowl that was the culture of the 80s . The musical highlight is a gutless wedding-band cover of Kool and the Gang's "Celebrate," with the bass turned down and honky back-up singers.
