TWELVE MONKEYS (1995) *** You gotta watch out for those animal rights people. They might really be terrorists plotting to destroy mankind and let ostriches run amok on the streets of Philadelphia. Bruce Willis as a grotesque and simian psychopath with a taste for great music, Madeleine Stowe as the beautiful and cerebral psychiatrist, Brad Pitt as a rich kid insane genius-there's a lot of type-casting going on here. Terry Gilliam comes up with all the great shots and angles, determinedly quirky cuts and absurdities, and weirdness largely lifted from La Jetee, but frankly this flick would just be another expanded remake of a superior original without Pitt. Pitt's absolutely brilliant-fucking hysterical "Fuck the Bozos" revolutionary screaming compound litanies of excoriated mirth and manifesto. The romantic subtext? Willis gets a little lip off Stowe after he puts on a fake walrus mustache and long hair wig.
