TWO OF A KIND (1983) *1/2 The stars of Grease are back with another wacky romance! Um yea, I think. John Travolta takes yet another shot at being a lovable rogue, but it being the eighties they don't even bother pretending that Oliva Newton-John, or anyone else, is a little innocent. There is, however, a love scene where they make a big deal about not doing it. Oliva's songs are even worse than in Grease (why did she ever stop doing Australian country ditties?), but they compensate by not being as catchy. Scatman Crothers is the only interesting member of a quartet of essentially disrespectful angels, but not so interesting that a transition into the "Honk Kong Phooey" character wouldn't be welcome. You have every right to expect a little more or a little less of each of these actors but if good intentions are valuable currency...well, they aren't rich performances in any currency, but there does appear to be a thin veneer of good intentions. The most disappointing, but far from the worst, performance is Oliver Reed as the devil. I mean, you'd be sure that Reed would at least know enough about it to be found with a drink in at least one scene. Instead he smirks and rolls his eyes, corraling his immense talents into a paper doll of the role, which is no doubt exactly how he felt about all that was going on around him. He does feature a semi-interesting bevy of hats.
