TWO RODE TOGETHER (1961) ** Fair to middlin', even brilliant for fleeting western moments, when Jimmy Stewart's hemmin' and hawin' his way into a monologue. It's like Michael Owen with the ball on the far side and only two guys between him and goal, anything can happen then. John Ford misleads us with a few great early foot shots, but there's nothing else, standard issue skin deep moralizing. If only Shirley Jones would have gone with her initial instinct not to marry we wouldn't have got stuck with all those Partridges. Fares somewhat better as a visionary historical work: as quoth the prophet Stewart, "Too many Ringles!" I'll drink at that.
