THE UNCANNY (1977) *1/2 Peter Cushing is trying to sell one of the dumbest books in the history of the world, or at least since Sylvia Plath. This gives them an opportunity to foist three more ridiculous stories about evil cats at us, instead of just one. It may be to our benefit, as none of the stories can sustain their twenty minutes anyway. It's not that the plot or production is particularly worse than other films of this ilk, but all the moronic cats are really irritating, too, particularly in the first segment where they're all sitting around making dumb noises and looking stupid. There are a few scenes of reasonably glorious idiocy, but while there's such thing as being "so stupid that it's funny," there's also plenty of evidence that something can be "too stupid to be funny." Things pick up in the third segment when Donald Pleasence shows up, and that's Joan Greenwood in bed in the first, so...gather your rosebuds while ye may...
