A VIEW TO A KILL (1985) ** Mundane Bond, who would have thought it possible? Interesting cast assembled, but not much acting from any of them...perhaps they thought it was enough to concept-check Silicon Valley and hint the radical thought that the USA and USSR might have common interests. Who knows, who cares? Tanya Roberts is pretty, but a bad actress even for a Bond girl. Roger Moore appears to be bored in his last role as James Bond, one wonders if it could possibly happen to the real thing, if there was one, and probably there would at least be days. I can't think of better casting for a genetic isotope of a Soviet citizen concocted by a runaway Nazi geneticist than Christopher Walken, but when he shines for a few lines it illuminates the mediocrity the rest of his performance more than anything else. Grace Jones is scary, a gay guy's dream girl validating everything. The action is regular but the most interesting aspect is the musical theme. The Duran Duran performance is so bad that even audio purists like myself won't mind banter during the opening credits, but John Barry slows the piece during various scenes, stretching in horns and laying it onto the film like clouds. It has a few truly beautiful lines.
