WAKE OF THE RED WITCH (1949) ** John Wayne battles and matches wits with bureacrats and boats; sinking, sunken, and exploded ones; Gail Russell, most of his crew, worshipful natives, cop types, and most notably an enormous rubber octopus. He doesn't do quite as well with the octopus as Bela Lugosi did once it calmed down in Bride of the Monster (Ed Wood stole the octopus from sets, but forgot to nab the motor), but it's a fairly memorable scene all the same. The pulp fiction plot takes a long, long time to get anywhere entertaining but eventually you think that it's not going to unfold at all, so there is a sense of gratitude once it turns out to be not nearly as dumb as you were afraid it would be.
