THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS (1980) * It's one of those movies that you continue watching, with something almost resembling interest, just to see if it can possibly maintain its excruciating level of boredom. Then it bursts forth in a grand finale so ridiculous that the whole thing would have almost been worthwhile, if it hadn't been such a waste of time. Bette Davis still had incredible presence, and spit her lines out in that inimitable style that could have intimidated Clint Eastwood. It did not, however, phase Lynn-Holly Johnson in the slightest. Lynn-Holly wambles on obliviously, leaving only questions as to whether her hair, voice, or facial expressions are most absurd, disproportionate, or inappropriate, in her wake. I personally believe that the facials made a clean sweep of all categories, but there's certainly room for dissenting opinions. If you don't have a headache, this will likely give you one. If you already have a headache, it won't be a good diversion but you may learn to better appreciate the aesthetics of your headache.
