THE WATERBOY (1998) **1/2 Well-paced like a hopped up lawnmower, Adam Sandler vehicle. It doesn't show any of the flagrant brilliance of of his best Saturday Night Live sketches, but it moseys along happily, makes a few very shallow but generally deserved biting social commentaries (everything is "the devil" to southern Louisiana bayou mama Kathy Bates), and builds up to a strategically unpredictable predictable climax in the closing seconds of the Bourbon Bowl. Henry Winkler has some shining moments as the wiley football coach with psychological problems. Fairuza Balk is well cast as the borderline psychotic love interest (the sign during the GED is great) with a good heart.
