THE WHITE ZOMBIE (1932) ** Fresh from success of utterly historic proportion in Dracula, Bela Lugosi immediately headed for the ditch of an independent production on a phenomenon previously unknown to film: the zombie! Aieeeee!!!! He's quite dapper with aggravated widow's peak, a goatee, one thick eyebrow, and speaking French. There are some very nice elemental special effects-overlay fades, and visual effervescence, and little focus things that I'm almost certain were intentional. The best is when this chick looks in her teacup and sees Bela's big old haid. There's a really funny scene of this guy leading the same poor gal down the stairs to get married, and he's trying to talk her out of it, much to her irritation. Several of the lines are unintentionally funny, the settings are perfectly atmostpheric. "....ach, zose vitch-dokterss!"
