THE WICKER MAN (1975) *** There's this island west of Scotland with palm trees on it...inhabited by, for the most part, fun-loving musical folk. A cop shows up with bad vibes and a lot of irritating questions so they mess with his mind for awhile and he's subsequently sentenced. Demonstrates problems attendant in mixing religion with science and law. They play several cards of the plot too quickly, but the music is tremendously atmospheric: Celtic island songs, and single-note electric guitar during the chase scene through the caves. Britt Eckland is perfectly cast as the bar owner's daughter. Christopher Lee is better than ever as a different kind of monster. Gorgeous cinematography, spectacular pagan pageantry.
