WIDOW'S PEAK (1994) **1/2 In which Mia Farrow (in a role written for her mother) basically says something like "Oh yeah, so you think Meryl Streep's any good at accents?" She says it in a lilting casual Irish brogue, so sensitive and serene that you might think that it was brought upon her by the wee people themselves. And if you thought that, then you're all set up for the whodunit that won't even admit that it's a mystery until it's solved itself. So much for hints, but don't blame me for they didn't give me a one. I made it up all by meself and I woon't say whether it has to do with the film or no. Whoever thought that casting Natasha Richardson in some of the same scenes as Mia should probably do a bit of remedial work, but Natasha does better than you'd have a right to expect when she's just working around normal people. Gerard McSorley doesn't give lie to John le Carré's edict that "a lawyer is always an arsehole," but he does at least demonstrate why that's not always a bad thing.
