THE FLINTSTONES IN VIVA ROCK VEGAS (2000) *1/2 When Fred met Wilma. Prequel to everything else you've ever known about the Flintstones (whether you wanted to or not). It turns out that Betty was a bit loose, or celebratory, or real; and that Wilma was a socialite too perceptive to stay the course. Kristen Johnston is probably more credible as a space alien than the queen of upper crust Bedrock, but which one is further from the Wilma we all know and love from Saturday morning cartoons? Of course Fred and Barney offer no surprises at all, it could be a metaphor that some personalities are entirely epidermal if there was any symbolism to it or anything was hidden. Doesn't have the lively leads of the first peopled Flintstones flick, and tries to make up for it by offering Harvey Korman (good) and Joan Collins (type-cast disgusting, so effective I guess) in the wings. The stuff about Mick Jagged and the Stones might have brought some joy years earlier: at this point all I could think was that the slumberous Jagged evinced levels of genuine enthusiasm and dedication to his craft dwarfing those of the subject of the satire.
