THE FLY (1958) *** We don't spend enough time being thankful for the simple things. Like that we're not half fly. It's amazing that they could interest anyone in being a scientist after this one. Well done, I actually felt tense while they were chasing around a fly trying to catch it without injuring it. A lot of scenes that are preposterously absurd out of context actually work here, even the fly with a high-pitched voice getting eaten by the spider. "Searching for the truth is the most important work in the world. And the most dangerous." There's tragedy of course, it's difficult to see a grown man with a fly head battling himself. I'm grateful for the human capacity for creative thought, and that my own doesn't lead on paths like this.
