FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN (1942) ** Endeavors to answer the age old question-Can the Wolfman beat up Frankenstein, or can Frankenstein beat up the Wolfman? It looks like Frankenstein would take him, but before we find out for sure some moronic villager lights a ten mile-long fuse and blows up the dam, which naturally busts and washes away Frankenstein's castle. The best part is Bela Lugosi's Frankenstein arm gestures, kind of a cross between a baby with too much starch in his shirt and a giraffe standing on its hindlegs. Actually Bela's tormented facial gestures are pretty brilliant too. Too bad they never made one where he was the Wolf Man, Frankenstein and Drac. It's tricky the way they always have the monster's victims be someone who just showed up; gives the viewer a skewed sense of caring only for the accursed and sympathetic monster rather than the slain victims. It's a very unreal and unhealthy perspective, like being a defense lawyer or a psychiatrist.
