FUNNY FACE (1957) ** It's a tragic tale really. Audrey Hepburn is great as the beautiful empathicalist working at this cool bookstore in Greenwich Village. Fred Astaire is a hack photographer for a fashion magazine that's really excited about the colour pink. Eventually they hijack her aesthetic by taking her to Paris, and she gets so messed up that she settles for Fred. But not before she dances him under the table. He is to dancing what Eddie Van Halen is to electric guitar-scales played really fast and loud. The George and Ira Gershwin score is comparable to, but not quite as catchy as, a morning with "Sesame Street." There is no plausible explanation for why Hepburn considers Astaire a skilled photographer, and even less evidence supporting the supposition that she would find him attractive. It is probable that this story line represents an approximation developed from incomplete original texts, or that the script was otherwise doctored. Kay Thompson is very spirited as the pushy beourgeosie fashion lady.
