HELL UP IN HARLEM (1973) *1/2 Black mobsta movie; sequel to a different one. There's not that much of a plot I guess, but what there is gets going fast, and I have to admit confused me. I thought old Big Papa was still dreaming for about 40 minutes after he stopped. If he ever was. The suits these Brothers wore are nothing short of great. How can that stuff have gone out of style and people making decent money walk around in suits from the Men's Fashion Depot? There is no sartorial Darwinism. This movie has one truly great moment: the close-ups on the faces of the maids as they shoot the fuck out of the mafiosi on their Caribbean hideaway, just before they inform the Godfather guy that he's their prisoner and there will be chitlins, cornbread and collard greens for lunch, and watermelon for desert. Music by Edwin Starr is very good, but the first in the series, Black Caesar, was graced by that of none other than James Brown hisseyf! JB the King of Soul!! Yeeeeeow!!!!!
