HIGH HOPES (1988) ** Does a good enough job of getting across the Thatcher-era feeling that there's no hope. It's kind of got the feel of a later Woody Allen movie, but without the even occasional humor. Superficial twittering yuppies and dope-smoking Marxists; the latter know that the revolution isn't coming but they're a little nicer and a great deal more authentic than the former. They laugh a bit more too, but mainly after they smoke. They all look nuts to the mom, who is nuts. Prime faire for those that think depression is inherently artsy or poignant.
