HOMEGROWN (1997) ** Just in case anyone didn't notice, marijuana-growing isn't just for dumb, stoned hippies anymore. In fact marijuana growing just isn't for dumb, stoned hippies anymore. You need horticulture and business degrees, with minors in modern weaponry and honors-level coalition-building (cops, helicopter pilots, migrant workers,etc.). This film isn't seamless, or consistent, or even very good. But it does have some very funny moments, hazily underdeveloped and confused in the Cheech & Chong tradition. Stoned people are funny! A bunch of stars, but Ryan Phillippe comes off best as the soft-bearded kid who doesn't understand why anyone would sleep with someone they don't love.
