THE HUMAN COMEDY (1943) *1/2 It's a Norman Rockwell greetings card of a movie; a "get well soon" card to the world playing manipulatively at the schmaltzy sentimentality of the era. There isn't any genuine dialogue, just connecting lines between speeches. Mickey Rooney has this casual off-the-cuff rhythm that he does as well as anyone ever has, but he's so good at it that he tries to pull it when it doesn't quite fit, and when he has to go outside it he's as far over his head as the rest of the cast. Still, the film has a warm feeling-there's nothing wrong with goodness and caring and teachers and nice old drunk guys-and at least Rooney doesn't get the girl at the end. He has the all-time worst part-time job, delivering telegrams during war-time.
