I MARRIED A WITCH (1942) **1/2 Veronica Lake casts a spell, a few hundred years before most of the action, that some puritan's descendants will always marry the wrong girl; most inconvenient when she later drinks a "madly in love" potion meant for one of those descendants. Only such a potion could explain why Lake would fall for Fredric March, in fact only dreams of political domination (or her domineering father) could explain even bitchy Susan Hayward being willing to to marry him. Fortunately Lake's own unforgiving father mainly manifests himself as smoke and buries himself in whiskey bottles, the muffling qualities of which don't diminish his singing. Rene' Clair directs beautifully but appears to consciously tone himself down to fit into the Hollywood game. Dalton Trumbo contributed to the rather silly, but delightfully feel-good chaotic script, which later formed the basis for "Bewitched," the greatest television series of all time.
