I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (1943) *** Those oldentyme black&white directors had to master shadow and light, and Jacques Tourneur presents a resplendent rainbow of grays. The supernatural scenes are particularly effective with a chilling priest and tremendous music (do voodoo choruses and drums really sound that good?). The acting is strong throughout, but there's not much foundation laid and so its very surprising when Frances Dee announces that she loves James Conway. Other than that the foreshadowing is painted in brush strokes so wide as to preclude surprise. Entertaining consideration of the psychological implications of belief and faith without getting preachy or didactic. Sometimes simple is better; this film wouldn't have packed the punch or even be particularly good in full colour and surround sound (well, except for the exquisite chanting and heavy jungle rhythms).
