JAWS 2 (1978) ** Stefano (from the soap opera "Days of Our Lives," Joseph Mascolo) storms into Martha's Vineyard making eyes and complements at and hugging Roy Scheider's wife, cutting shady real estate deals, bullying the town council, and generally talking like a petty corporate criminal. There's another shark also, the second one in the waters and promptly resolving what should have been the film's central theme: Can a shark beat up a helicopter? And look at the teenagers...they're all drinking! At a bar for kids replete with pinball machine! America was so free then, or at least acted more that way, and in one of many blows against realism the film didn't even depict marijuana use. Maybe the shark (but which one?) is a metaphor for impending Reaganism. Spielberg was missed somewhat for development of interhuman issues, but that's not what this film's about anyway is it? Jeannot Szwarc has timing and tricks plenty enough to scare any of us so desperate as to show up for a sequel of a film based on a pulp novel. Incidentally they did also write a spare paperback to accompany this film, and I read it in the backseat of a car. In addition to anything else this movie can be seen as a parable assuring that children who don't obey their parents will be eaten by a shark.
