JOE DIRT (2001) * David Spade sports the worst hair-do in the history of Hollywood, is taken prisoner by a transvestite predator, is covered with thick sewage bilge, mooned by commercial pilots, gets the super spoiler knocked off his Dodge, etc. It's supposed to be so sad that it's funny, but instead it's so stupid that it's sad. Adam Sandler produced this, suggesting only that he wanted to give rival Spade enough rope to drown himself. It's a mockery of a piece of...piece of post '70s Americana that probably deserves to be mocked, hell I've mocked it myself but also drank and smoked with the protagonists, as has I suspect Dennis Miller who somewhat revives things as a prototypical (except that he has a big vocabulary and is funny) radio talk jock...where was I? Anyway, nothing about this film vindicates that it comes in at a very full 91 minutes. Christopher Walken adds desperately needed class at the edge as a participant in the witness protection program, and Brittany Daniel might have gone on to a mediocre career had she not stigmatized herself as the girl who had sex with Joe Dirt (or David Spader, take your pick). Just for the record though, Lynyrd Skynyrd was a great band and I covet Dirt's Skynyrd t-shirt. Other than that, I guess Kid Rock is the classiest part.
