THE KEEP (1983) **1/2 Highly original and innovative work with exotic locations and a tremendous sense of drama. Tangerine Dream foreboding soundtrack complements and accentuates the on-screen drama, raising temperatures and angst readings despite a very stupid looking demon. The problems are that there isn't all that much of a plot to hang these on, what plot is there is often revolting (what do you expect, pitting Nazis against demons), and none of the actors rise to the level demanded by their surroundings (even Ian McKellen and Gabriel Byrne are patchy, and offer performances lacking any defining or forgiving moment of grace). Michael Mann keeps the visual treats coming out of the ubiquitous fog, castle with strange crosses, picturesque Romanian village, electric blue light, gulleys and corridors-if you're willing to settle for that it's a strong enough ride. Would have at least been something to hang a resplendent metaphor on but the most I could get out of it is "don't side with demons when you're fighting the devil."
