KEEP THE ASPIDISTRA FLYING (1997) ** The George Orwell comedy, it has its share of good lines. A guy is a pretty good adman, but longs to be a poet and is misled into thinking his stuff is good. Quits his job, gets a job at a lower class bookstore, finally gets $50 from the California Poetry Review, gets bombed and thrown in jail, and so of course fired and thrown out of his room (scandalous being thrown in jail, you know). He dives wholeheartedly into the gutter on the po' side of town where they drink and fight and hump with glee, develops genuine poetic sensibilities and writes some good lines, knocks up his visiting bourgeois girlfriend who is overcome by the fleas...goes back to work at the ad company because you gotta feed the kid. We lose more great poets that way.
