THE LADIES MAN (2000) **1/2 Hackneyed plot predictably superimposed upon the framework of a Saturday Night Live skit that was only moderately funny in the first place; wouldn't seem like there's much hope. But there is, because Tim Meadows is not only very soul but a master of timing, Will Ferrell is one of the most under-rated comedic talents of the day, Billy Dee Williams is an actor of that magnitude that can steal a scene simply by standing behind a bar, Karyn Parsons is an effective representation of the archetype that feels the need to tame even the most confirmed bachelour, and Tiffani Amber-Thiessen looks like nothing if not the bait of the climactic moment in films like this. The most glorious scenes include an interview with a nun, an astounding and extended Broadway send-up, and the emasculated spouse of all support groups. You must ultimately, you see, trust the wang, boldly await those random moments, and interpret them in the manner inspired. It's quite spiritual for a presentation that includes piña colada booty lotion, actually.
