THE LAST SEPTEMBER (1999) *1/2 Determinedly, not quite desperately, artsy rendering of the reverberations of the Easter Rebellion, miles away in the countryside. The sad part is that the aesthetic that the production squad tried so hard to get would have been effortlessly created as a side-effect if they'd been more straightforward. The actors have many very good moments and no bad ones, many of the shots are memorable, the plot is spare but not betrayed by the film's gentle gait...there was just a breakdown of confidence somewhere that led to them bringing in the steroids of pathos. Peaks in the first 45 seconds with an Al Jolson-driven jazz dance through the woods.
