LOVE AFFAIR (1994) ***1/2 Katharine Hepburn blesses the union of Annette Bening and Warren Beatty with the assurance of a pope. Warren Beatty may be in better position than anyone in the world to interpret this character he wrote but there's a lot of Joe Namath in it too. His airplane mirror scene lacks the flambouyance of the mirror scene in McCabe and Mrs. Miller but it's second to no other in assurance and resolve. The pacing is gentle jazz quirked ambitious, Tahiti looks like a great place to see your final sunset, best cinematic use ever of a Lennon/McCartney composition. Another miracle of love is that the screen can't stop you from feeling it with sympathetic mediums on the other side. Yeah it's a little soap operaey, but show me true love that isn't. Still, what's this stuff about smart film-literate people promising to meet at the top of the Empire State Building when they must surely know that the fates make showing up so difficult? The temptation is to say that the acting is great, but who was acting?
