LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER (1963) *** Pre-Roe v. Wade Italian immigrant kids in NYC romance. Sex was sin and abortion was pseudo-science, and this from the country that elected JFK. Nathalie Wood's range and artistic sensitivities dwarf those of Steve McQueen which makes them both well cast. The parents are particularly funny, somewhat intentionally I think, especially the line about how everyone in the USA wants to do what they want but no one knows what they want to do. The abortion scene is absolutely chilling, it should be required for southern fundamentalists and orthodox Catholics. Scotch and tonic.
