THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN RIDE! (1972) *1/2 It's not the worst premise actually: think of all the wonderful things that could be done if you could select the créme de la créme from a jail in Tucson and put their skills to use for good. That's about all the work the writers put into it until the closing scene when they show the utmost interest in militaristic cowboy strategies involving the extermination of a plethora of evil Mexicans. In between they take the shortcut by rendering the Mexicans metaphysically expendable due to their abuse of women, followed very shortly thereafter by the bonding scenes and ruminations on impending death between the hapless frontier ladies and recently liberated outlaws striving to make the world a better place. Lee Van Cleef had some leading man attributes of the mustachioed silent cowboy type and it's easy to see how Stefanie Powers might some day transcend material of this magnitude, though surprising that she did so all the way to primetime semi-stardom on "Hart to Hart."
