MIMIC (1997) ** Dark. Foreboding. Disgusting. Nauseating. This must be someone's idea of a good time, but I don't want to meet them. Everything strange from Hollywood happens in New York, often in the NY subway ruins. Giant cockroaches this time, perhaps as Mira Sorvino suspects with a hopped-up evolutionary reproductive system, but more likely, it appears to me, that have been mating with humans. No matter, the grime and mud are real, the sets look like your insides feel with the worst hangover in your life, and they're all swimming through it whilst awaiting for the attack of der überroaches. Probably not terribly revealing in the debate over cloning and genetic engineering, no more so in any event than the Republican National Convention. Dirtier though, less disgusting but with equivalent elements of amateurish acting and humour. Unlike the convention though, the film has well considered sets and sustains a sense of tense expectation that the horror may eventually end.
