MURIEL'S WEDDING (1994) *** Australian morality flick about an overweight daughter of a politician who's (the daughter) really into Abba. Only a small part of the charm is repeatedly hearing "Abba song" in Australian vocce'. Once it pulls you in with the schtick and bright colours and girl culture this tome of Porpoise Spit (an alleged town) gets down to the serious business of Olympian indictment, true love, scandal, theft, love, cancer, and employment in a video store. There's no way to suggest how it might even possibly have any chance whatsoever of working at all, you just have to watch it. And maybe we do get a chance to replay the big points we misplay, and maybe this film will make you get away from your insane family or treat your mother a little better-and if so, how can a movie do better than that?
