MURPHY'S WAR (1971) *** Well, is it an allegory on the Irish Revolution, a metaphor for rugged individualism in the technological age, or just another movie about the futility of war? What do you do when the Nazi's blow up your boat and kill all of your friends? Why, fix an airplane and learn to fly it and drop large Molotov cocktails on their submarine, of course! And when it turns out you didn't get the sub, and it shows up and blows up the airplane and kills innocent Venezualans? Clearly there is no choice but to ram the sub with a barge! Peter O'Toole is absolutely flawless as the crazed Irishman. No one else could have been believable. War isn't just hell. It's personal!
