MY DOG SKIP (2000) *1/2 The plot is an inelaborate, but stunningly thick, patchwork of cinematic cliche's, including most of the dumbest ones. They're glued onto Yazoo, Mississippi circa 1942, translating into a glossy Hollywood depiction of somewhere that it may have been even worse to grow up as a white male than a female or black. No matter how poorly presented or contrived there are few sadder things that can take place in a film than a boy hitting his dog on a baseball field in front of his girlfriend. Kevin Bacon is surprisingly close to competent, and offers split-seconds of genuine sensitivity, as the disabled war veteran father.
