NOSFERATU, EINE SYMPHONIE DES GRAUENS (Nosferatu, or Terror of Dracula, 1922) **1/2 Max Shreck is the most ridiculous looking vampire ever, cape and elegance substituted with Howard Hughes fingers and Dr. Spock ears. He also has some sort of problem with real estate-he has this kickin' castle and he wants to move into what appears to be something of a prototype apartment building. For reasons that damn capitalism Gustav von Wangenheim (the cast names may be the best part) wants him there, probably not because of the vamp's admiration for his (Wangenheim's) wife's (Greta Schroeder) neck. The real estate agent (the Van Helsing role) is here named "Knock" (Alexander Granach) and looks a lot like Krusty the Klown on exotic South American hallucinogens. Admittedly this was the early days, but they had more of the tools for a great slapstick than legit horror, especially if they'd let Wangenheim use him own name.
