THE AMBUSHERS (1967) ** I have this mental of Dean Martin hanging around Hollywood parties, sitting in the corner holding a sign that says "Will work for cocktails and scenes with beautiful starlets." And art like this is the result. It actually works in a way, the characters are all eager to be seen with Matt Helm, great detective; and it's an easy reality to mirror from the one in which they all just want to hang out with Dino. No one looks sorry to be there, and the goal appears to be to utter the most double entendres per minute. Not necessarily the best, you understand, the most. Sex was very popular then-if you haven't heard-all those taboos in the latter stages of inexorable collapse. You figure Dean enjoyed his scenes with Senta Berger the most, but my favorites are the one involving the drink-delivering golf cart and any of the ones depicting the flying saucer. Oh! And also all the great backgrounds to Dean in the culminating chase scene.
