Laural contemplates Benji

BENJI (1974) ** Some people don't like dog movies. Some people don't like romances. Some people don't like detective flicks. All of those people will find something to complain about here, and so will almost everyone else. It's funny how much the world has changed, without my really noticing. Even the kids can't really get into it these days; no magic, no violence, not paced like a video game. Instead you get a fairly nondescript dog going about his rounds, soft lens slo-mo shots of young lover dogs romping through the park...the incidental music all sounds like it could be instrumental filler on a Carpenters album. If you don't know how anyone could complain about any of that, I'm with you. It's heart warming, and wholesome, and surely even the literati can find solace and inspiration in the interior dog mind memory sequence. As a matter of fact, if someone doesn't like this film that doesn't make them sophisticated, or worldly, or even cynical...it only means that they've been tricked by cats. Help them, out of the kindness of your heart. Like Benji would. Like good ol' Benji would.
