DER JUNGE IN DER WASCHMACHINE (2006) ** I'm not against surrealistic impressionist existentialist movies, or art in general. In fact I'm very much in favor of it. The thing is, going in, you have to.not so much have low expectations, but rather not have any. In either event it's unlikely that there's going to be this great, clean cataclysmic connection. It just doesn't happen that way, often, too much is reliant on rapport. For the same reason the artist has to understand that he's not going to connect much with anyone, and if manages to connect in a big way with anyone the project is a complete success. I'm not saying that I didn't connect with Tim Großkurth at all-that wouldn't be true. But any connection was secondary to my conscious sensations that his imagery is very nice, and very German. Not unpleasant perceptions to be sure, but not the gut-wrenching experience that so many surrealists strive for. If they care at all. There is a pleasant, well actually kind of an unpleasant, objective cornerstone of a framework that you can construct if you choose, and I'm generally in favor of such things if the artist chooses to provide them. And if he does, it's not so bad to build there.
