DEUX FRÉRES (2004) ** I'll tell you why The Bear works and this doesn't: too fucking many people in it, this one. As in most animal movies, all of the adults are up to no good, and lord it up over both child and dumb animal. It's depressing. Yeah sure you know it's all gonna work out for the best-or at least ok-in the end, but it does a lousy job of even pretending that it's going to get there fast enough. Tigers are very cool, and I'm willing to listen to anyone who says that our treatment of them is disastrous, and that their disappearance from the face of the earth would/will be an unmitigated disaster for every manner of good taste. My problem is dressing that up in a wraparound outro to a movie that makes me sick to my stomach. The tigers are tremendous, lovable, wise, serene, powerful, everything that you could ever hope. I would rather just see them running around, eating cattle and playing in a muddy river or something. This other stuff isn't necessary, sheds no scientific light on any matter, and is generally uninspiring.
